Good afternoon West Community,
I am happy to report back to all of you who have kept in touch with my class here at West Leadership Academy. I want to start off by saying how much I appreciate all of the support I have received these past couple of months here at West, specifically those who have taken time to read what we have done here and taken an interest on how they can help join in on the conversation to build our students into responsible young adults.
That being said, last week marked the end of Unit II here in class, Healthy Relationships. A brief summary of what our final project was about can be seen below:
1. An identity mask, whose purpose is for students to decorate with key identifying traits as to the person they are in public. In other words, who they are to the people out in public. On the inside, the students have been instructed to decorate their masks with the identity they hide from public, specifically ideas and constructs that might be holding them back.
2. The students must write an "I Am" Poem, in which they have an opportunity to describe themselves
3. Last but not least, students will have to write and reflect what we have learned this past unit. Not only that, the student's need to also write about their experience with their mentees/mentors, the idea being if they have been able to relate some of the lessons from the unit to build a positive relationship. Below is an example of one of our students in class!
And last but not least, my mentor leaders below, who have shown incredible strength and leadership this year. I am truly blessed to have them by my side, as Abi, Naisett, Fantasia, Natalie and Joe have grown significantly in basically all areas of what it means to be a student that leads by example. They have unequivocally shown myself they are here for the right reasons and they are here to lead their classes on being the best possible people in their communities.
My mentor leaders have helped themselves develop their values, work ethic, character & integrity. I cannot wait to see what they develop the class to become next year.
Since we are at the end of a unit, this week we will start a new unit -- The War on Drugs.
Tune in next week to read what the class is up to, as I am sure that I will have a lot to report as we start this new unit.
As always...
Happy reading, y'all.
Cowboys, Out.
